The space
An 18th-century palace house on calle Bolsa, whose ground floor once housed the Almacén del Reloj, in a building owned by León de Argüeso.
The earliest documented reference we have found to León de Argüeso in Sanlúcar dates from 1831, when he bought half of a house and warehouse on calle de las Cruces. A grocery and fine-goods shop known as the “Almacén del Reloj” had traded there for many years, named after a sundial on the building's façade. It was here that Argüeso, then thirty years old, began his business career. Some years later, between 1845 and 1847, he acquired the other half of the property. On calle de las Cruces the building adjoined another house that had belonged to the Dominican convent of Madre de Dios, which Argüeso also bought in 1856, after the sale of church property under the disentailment laws, joining both buildings into a single estate. León de Argüeso lived in this house for the rest of his life, together with his three nephews, the shop assistants and the servants. This first commercial and residential premises became the nerve centre of his businesses, from which he ran all his economic activities.
The Almacén del Reloj was a typical tienda de montañés, the traditional grocery of the period. It stood on the corner of two streets, Cruces and Bolsa, with doors opening onto both. It would have had the classic layout of such shops, with the ground floor divided into three areas: a tavern, a grocery and a large back room for storage. The living quarters were on the main floor, while the second floor was set aside for the servants and shop staff. After León de Argüeso's death, the shop carried on with his heirs for some years.
